Merit Medical Systems Inc. reported it is buying the lead management assets of Cook Medical Inc. for $210 million in cash. The Cook products consist of lead extraction devices and other lead management products.
Endoron Medical Ltd. raised $10 million in its series A funding round to accelerate clinical validation work on its catheter-based endostapling system, Aortoseal, which repairs abdominal aortic aneurysms. The round was led by Sofinnova Partners, with participation from the European Innovation Council Fund.
Johnson Matthey plc agreed to sell its medical device components business to Montagu Private Equity for £550 million ($700 million) on a cash-free, debt-free basis. For Montagu, the deal is part of its expanding health care portfolio. Earlier in 2024 the private equity firm, which is the primary shareholder in RTI Surgical Inc., acquired Cook Biotech Inc. from Cook Medical Inc. and merged the two companies.
The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has wrapped up its rulemaking for the outpatient prospective payment system (OPPS) for calendar year 2024, bringing some good news and some bad news for the medical device industry. While Philips North America came home with a new technology pass-through (NTPT) payment for its Cavaclear device, Cook Medical Inc., was less fortunate with its Echo Tip device as CMS declared that the Echo Tip did not satisfy the substantial clinical improvement criteria for transitional pass-through payment.
Limaca Medical Ltd. received U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance for its Precision for gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) biopsy device which the company said allows for faster, more efficient and safer collection of tumor tissue samples. The approval follows the receipt of breakthrough device designation, and the deployment of the device into the U.S. market should lead to more efficient and effective diagnosis of GI cancers.
The proposed $875 million acquisition of Cook Medical Inc.’s reproductive health business by the Coopercompanies Inc. has been scotched, a development lauded by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in a statement describing the proposed transaction as anticompetitive. However, the FTC statement also pointed to cooperation from authorities in both the U.K. and Australia as critical in forcing the abandonment of the transaction, a signal that such cooperation is likely to grow in the future.

Both Cook Medical and Philips North America are pushing CMS for new technology pass-through (NTPT) payments for their offerings, but these two larger firms have a lot of company in the NTPT sweepstakes.
