Signos Inc. landed U.S. FDA clearance for its over-the-counter glucose monitoring system, which combines Dexcom Inc.'s non-prescription Stelo continuous glucose monitor with an AI-powered platform focused on weight management and metabolism. The sensor transmits glucose readings to a smartphone app that interprets the data, provides guidance for healthy habits and educates the user.

Abbott Laboratories’ second quarter results echoed Johnson & Johnson’s, with med tech performing the hero’s work with strong growth. Overall, Abbott slightly beat expectations with sales up 6.9% overall compared to 2Q 2024, largely boosted by the med-tech unit’s organic revenue increase of 12.2%, and worldwide sales for the quarter of $11.1 billion. Diabetes provided a particularly bright spot with 19.5% year-over-year growth for continuous glucose monitoring devices.

Abbott Laboratories’ diabetes unit opened the month with a two-cannon salvo – a partnership with Beta Bionics Inc. that will integrate Abbott’s Freestyle Libre 3 Plus continuous glucose monitor with the Ilet Bionic Pancreas system and the roll out of its over-the-counter Lingo CGM in the U.S.

As of this week, consumers can order Dexcom Inc.’s Stelo continuous glucose monitor (CGM) online without a prescription, making it the first to hit the market. Dexcom will have competition soon, however, with Abbott Laboratories planning to roll out its over-the-counter Lingo and Libre Rio CGMs in short order.

In a grand slam for Dexcom Inc., the U.S. FDA cleared its Stelo glucose biosensor system for over-the-counter marketing, making it the first integrated continuous glucose monitor available without a prescription. Designed for use by the 25 million adults with diabetes who do not use insulin and do not have problematic hypoglycemia, the FDA indication expanded the clearance for Stelo to include individuals without diabetes “who want to better understand how diet and exercise may impact blood sugar levels,” dramatically expanding the market opportunity.
