Edwards rolls out 2020 guidance with TAVR optimism, slow pace on mitral and tricuspid

Edwards Lifesciences Corp. added more than $20 billion so far this year to its market cap to exceed a $50 billion valuation. Executives worked to convince Wall Street that 2020 and beyond are lining up to be additional banner years for the cardiovascular med-tech giant at the company’s annual investor meeting. While the newly introduced guidance for next year from Edwards was largely in line or a bit better than analysts had anticipated, its share price remained relatively flat on the event. Read More

Viewray sees an additional $139M with collaborations with Elekta, Medtronic

As part of newly announced collaborations with Cleveland-based Viewray Inc., Elekta AB assumed a 9.9% stake in the company, and Medtronic plc also made a minority investment. The company's largest shareholder, Fosun International Ltd., also led the round. "In total, the company raised approximately $139 million, net of fees," Viewray President and CEO Scott Drake told BioWorld MedTech. Read More

Israeli, U.S. teams collaborate on technology for respiratory tract diseases

HONG KONG – Negev-based Ben-Gurion University (BGU) and Beersheba-based Soroka Medical Center in Israel, working with the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati (UC), have developed a technology for unblocking and removing secretions from airways to to treat patients with diseases affecting the respiratory tract. FDA grants rare pediatric disease status for outer ear reconstruction system

New York-based startup 3Dbio Therapeutics snagged a rare pediatric disease designation from the U.S. FDA for Aurinovo, its investigational combination product for reconstruction of the outer ear in patients with microtia. The product offers an alternative to established treatments, none of which enable patients to regain an auricle comprising living tissue other than rib grafts, which are associated with significant donor site morbidity. U.S. health spending rises to $3.6T in 2018, but falls as share of GDP

Policymakers are often as sensitive to overall health care spending as they are to increases in Medicare spending, and the latest report on both brought some good news and some bad news. The good news is that overall health care spending was essentially flat as a share of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2018, but the bad news is that Medicare spending jumped 6.4%, thus renewing the troublesome historical trend of outpacing typical GDP growth. TGA goes back to the drawing board again with guidance on custom-made and 3D-printed devices

PERTH, Australia – Industry was supportive of most of the changes proposed by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for custom-made and 3D-printed devices. However, the comments also indicated that the current regulatory requirements for custom-made devices are not well understood. The agency stressed that increasing use of 3D printing for medical applications is raising questions about the adequacy of the current medical device regulatory framework to mitigate risks to patients.
