The Elevair endobronchial coil for treatment of emphysema ran into difficulty at a June 14 FDA advisory committee and came up short on the vote of whether the benefits of the device outweigh the risks. Still, the Elevair, made by Pneumrx Inc. of Mountain View, Calif., addresses late-stage emphysema, a condition that leaves sufferers with few options, and some encouraging signals in a subset of the pivotal study population led panelists to request additional studies the sponsor could use to salvage the application.
