Two multi-center studies published in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery confirm that balloon sinuplasty technology, developed by Acclarent (Menlo Park, California), is safe and effective when used by physicians to treat chronic sinusitis patients. The foundation for those studies was a six-month clinical trial called CLEAR that began in 2005. Balloon sinuplasty technology is used to restore normal sinus drainage by widening constricted sinus passages with specially designed catheters and balloons. The technology has been used to treat over 40,000 patients since receiving FDA clearance in 2005 and can be used alone or with standard surgical instrumentation. Acclarent specializes in the field of otolaryngology.

• Calypso Medical (Seattle) reported the launch of the AIM clinical study (Assessing the Impact of Margin Reduction) using Calypso Medical's GPS for the Body technology for patients receiving radiation therapy for prostate cancer. The primary objectives of the study are to evaluate acute and chronic quality-of-life assessments and complications related to external beam radiation therapy in prostate cancer patients when the Calypso 4-D localization system is used for managing motion. Calypso Medical Technologies make a tumor localization system that uses miniaturized implanted devices (Beacon electromagnetic transponders) to continuously, accurately, and objectively pinpoint and track the location of tumors for improved accuracy and management of radiation therapy delivery.
