StemCellPatents.com (Toronto) reported the launch of its newly redesigned, free database covering U.S.-issued patents dealing with stem cells.

The website, www.stemcellpatents.com, provides summaries and analysis of more than 1,200 patents picked by experts in the field to be of relevance to stem cell commercialization and development.

"The minefield of issued patents in the area of stem cell therapy is grossly underestimated by Industry," said Dr. Vladimir Bogin, a principal in Cromos Pharma Services (Portland, Oregon). "While the media has focused on the key WARF patents on embryonic stem cells, there are at least 1,200 issued patents dealing with stem cells directly in one way or another."

He added, "Numerous companies are entering the area of stem cell therapeutics; however, many of these companies do not know about the existence of these patents. Our efforts are targeted to allowing everyone to understand what is out there and what is not, with the hope of accelerating commercialization and, in turn, progress."

With industry input and guidance, the company said the redesigned site "will continue to provide its subscribers and members with their increasingly popular weekly newsletter, containing newly issued patents, as well as various new products and reports that will be added regularly and available on their website."
