Spinal technology company X-spine Systems (Miamisburg, Ohio) reported winning a patent protecting its latest technology for augmentation of the spinal disk and functional spinal unit.
“We believe this technology represents the next evolution in the surgical treatment of degenerative disk disease,” said David Kirschman, MD, president of X-spine. “The key concept of this technology is to augment, rather than replace, degenerating spinal motion elements, including disks and facet joints.”
The disk augmentation technology incorporates an adjustable elastomer, which allows the surgeon to dial in the desired compliance of the system, the company said. Currently undergoing biomechanical testing, the system also features a straightforward, tissue sparing implantation procedure. Funding of the technology development is being performed through a partnership of company investment, private investment and a recently awarded entrepreneurial development grant from the state of Ohio.
The disk augmentation technology will add to the company’s portfolio of X-spine products, including the Capless line of polyaxial screw systems, and Spider Cervical line of cervical plating products.
