Charles Harwood and Ron Sparks were named healthcare industry advisors for Avista Capital Partners (New York). Harwood currently serves as executive chairman of BioReliance, an Avista portfolio company. Sparks was most recently president/CEO of Accellent. Avista Capital is a private equity firm.

Ronald Green was named CEO of Barnev (Andover, Massachusetts). Most recently, he was a senior executive of Axya Medical. Barnev makes BirthTrack continuous labor monitoring solutions.

Todd Wood was named VP of operations and acting CFO of Biopure (Cambridge, Massachusetts). Wood has been a consultant to the company since earlier this year, serving as a director of business development. Biopure makes pharmaceuticals, called oxygen therapeutics, that are intravenously administered to deliver oxygen to the body’s tissues.

Gerald Masoudi has been appointed associate general counsel/chief counsel of the food and drug division of the Department of Health and Human Services’Office of the General Counsel(Washington), which handles legal matters for the FDA. Since 2005, Masoudi has been deputy assistant attorney general in charge of international, policy and appellate matters in the antitrust division at the Department of Justice.

• Iridex (Mountain View, California) reported that Barry Caldwell has resigned as the company’s president/CEO and as a member of the board of directors. The board has appointed Theodore Boutacoff, who is currently a member and chairman of the board, to serve as the president/CEO. Iridex makes therapeutic-based laser systems, disposable laser probes and delivery devices to treat eye diseases in ophthalmology and skin disorders in the aesthetics market.

Cindy Setum, PhD, was named VP of clinical affairs of TopSpin Medical (Tel Aviv, Israel). Setum previously was VP of clinical and medical affairs at Possis Medical. TopSpin Medical makes high-resolution MRI using an IntraVascular MRI catheter for the coronary arteries.
