SAFC, a member of the Sigma-Aldrich Group (both St. Louis), reported formation of a new entity, SAFC Supply Solutions, combining its Specialties business with capabilities of the manufacturing site of Proliog Reagents (Hamburg, Germany), a company acquired from Degussa (Frankfurt, Germany) in April 2005.

SAFC Supply Solutions will provide raw materials, offering more than 80,000 products, half manufactured in-house. Its market focus, SAFC said, will include organic raw materials for in vitro diagnostics manufacturers, biopharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals, and flavors and fragrances.

Manufacturing facilities are located in cities St. Louis; Sheboygan and Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Steinheim and Hamburg, Germany; Buchs, Switzerland; and Gillingham and Poole, UK.

“The name 'Supply Solutions' more accurately reflects our ability to provide customized services around our extensive fine chemical and biochemical product range,” said Frank Wicks, president of SAFC.

Sigma-Aldrich said that creation of the Supply Solutions business represents the latest addition to its plan, launched in 2005, to create “high-performing initiatives in the custom chemical business sector expected to drive SAFC sales to more than $400 million and secure its position as a top 10 fine chemical company worldwide.”

SAFC is the custom manufacturing group within Sigma-Aldrich focused on biochemical production.
