Biogen Inc. announced plans to expand lab and office spacenext to its main laboratory building in Cambridge, Mass.
The major new facility will encompass 130,000 square feet inits first phase, scheduled to start construction in the late fall.Completion is anticipated in 1995. The land is currently ownedby the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority.
"After review of a number of potential sites both inMassachusetts and other states, we feel that remaining inCambridge is our most attractive option at this time," said JimVincent, Biogen's chairman.
Biogen (NASDAQ:BGEN) currently occupies laboratory,production and office space in five buildings in Cambridge andhas options to expand significantly on the proposedconstruction site, which it considers part of the Kendall Squarebiotechnology community.
The company generates revenues from worldwide sales bylicensees of five products, including alpha interferon andhepatitis B vaccines and diagnostic products. It is alsodeveloping and testing treatments for heart disease,inflammatory diseases, AIDS and other cancers and viruses.
