Escagenetics Corp. said Monday that it has entered into anagreement with Quest International, a division of Unilever, toscale up production of Escagenetics' PhytoVanilla andPhytoVanillin flavorings.
The natural flavorings, which are derived from cell culturetechnology, were developed to compete with synthetic vanillinand the more expensive natural vanillin extract. Scale up willbe undertaken at Quest's facilities for product developmentand market analysis.
Quest will fund the work, said Raymond Moshy, president andchief executive of Escagenetics. The companies have notdiscussed whether Quest would receive an exclusive license ifit is interested in the products, Moshy said.
Quest, located in Owings Mills, Md., is one of the world'slargest suppliers of food flavorings, Moshy said.
Stock of San Carlos, Calif.-based Escagenetics (AMEX:ESN)closed up 13 cents on Monday at $8.75.
