CALGENE REPORTS DEEPER NET LOSSCalgene Inc. (NASDAQ:CGNE) of Davis, Calif., said a reduction inrevenues and an increased loss for the first six monthscompared with the previous year is due primarily to a $2.5million sale of technology rights in non-core crop areas.Research and development expenditures for the first sixmonths reflect a decrease of 14 percent from the prior year's$6.2 million. The reduction in R&D expenses reflects therestructuring and focus on the core crop areas implemented bythe company in June 1990, the company said.

NICHOLS REPORTS INCREASED REVENUES

Dr. Albert L. Nichols, chairman of the board and chief executiveofficer, of Nichols Institute (ASE:LAB) of San Juan Capistrano,Calif., said the company's reported results are in line with itsexpectations for 1990. He said the results reflect continuedsteady growth in the company's core Reference Laboratoryoperations, its Midwest-based regional laboratories and itsdiagnostic kit business. He also said that fourth-quarter resultswere adversely affected by the company's new operations atits regional laboratory in Portland, Ore., and its joint-venturelaboratory in Dallas.
