LILLY SALES RISE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER, YEAREli Lilly & Co. (NYSE:LLY) of Indianapolis said rising profits inboth the fourth quarter and the year resulted from salesgrowth in each of the company's operations. "Manufacturingcosts and operating expenses for the year increased at a slowerrate than sales," said Chairman Richard D. Wood. Other incomefor the year was more than $100 million less than a year ago.

MARION MERRELL DOW REPORTS 53% JUMP IN EARNINGS

Marion Merrell Dow of Kansas City, Mo., said sales of theCardizem line of cardiovascular products and Seldane, a non-sedating antihistimine, helped boost fourth-quarter profits by53 percent. Marion Merrell was created in December 1989 bythe merger of Marion Laboratories Inc and Merrell DowPharmaceuticals Inc.
