About 56% of the clinical data recorded by BioWorld in 2022 target therapies for oncology, as well as infectious and neurological diseases, but news on COVID-19 efforts continue to dwindle compared with last year.
More than a quarter of all clinical data reported this year are targeting cancer indications, as pandemic news dips and overall activity drops by 12.5%.
The amount of clinical data reported in January so far is currently 30% below the amount reported during the same month last year, which was the slowest month of 2021.
Marking September as the second busiest month, 2021 is more than 6% ahead of last year in terms of reported clinical data, although the gap between the two years has narrowed significantly from 26% in April.
Nearly 18% of clinical data reported in August were focused on the COVID-19 pandemic, representing the highest percentage for any single month this year. During the month, as the Delta variant took hold throughout the U.S., news of COVID-19 efforts spiked, doubling the amounts seen in both June and July, in which about 9% of the news was pandemic-related, and up significantly from 10% in May.
Clinical data in 2021 has risen by about 9.2% in comparison with the same timeframe in 2020. As of mid-August, BioWorld has tracked a total of 2,400 entries of clinical data, which is up from the 2,197 entries last year. The gap has decreased from about 26% in mid-April, suggesting a steady slowdown in activity.
Harbour Biomed Therapeutics Ltd. said its anti-FcRn monoclonal antibody, batoclimab, generated top-line phase II data in generalized myasthenia gravis, and the company expects to move into a phase III study by the end of this year, with final data reported in April 2022.
While overall clinical trial activity appears to be slowing, June was the busiest month for the year, and, in fact, all of last year, with a total of 436 items of news related to phase I, phase II and phase III research.
