Life science startup Surge Inc. raised $2.6 million in a financing led by Hcvd and Boutique Venture Partners. The funds will be used to advance its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered technology aimed at making a patient’s surgical journey safer.
Investors are backing Levita Magnetics International Corp. with $26 million to advance its new Magnetic-Assisted Robotic Surgery (MARS) platform. The series C financing round was led by Ballast Capital, with participation from Medtex Ventures, Invermaster and Carao Ventures. The new platform builds on the company’s first commercial device, the Levita Magnetic Surgical system which received U.S. FDA approval in 2015. The system enables reduced-port laparoscopic surgical procedures and consists of an external magnet that is placed on the skin and controls a magnetic grasper inside the abdomen during surgery.
With top line results from its major phase III RECON study in hand, Axogen Inc. is hoping to expand adoption of its allograft nerve repair product Avance. RECON was designed as a non-inferiority study comparing Avance to nerve cuffs (manufactured conduits) which are commercially available. The study met its primary endpoint for the return of sensory function as measured by static two-point discrimination, and the safety profile was consistent with previously published data.

Hot off the heels of a $45 million series B financing raise, Activ Surgical Inc. has completed the first clinical trial evaluating its Activinsights augment reality (AR)-based software suite and Activsight imaging module. The safety and feasibility study, carried out with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) is the first of several trials the Boston-based company is planning in 2021.

Founded in 2017, Boston-based Activ Surgical is preparing to commercialize its first product Activinsights, an FDA-cleared software that provides real-time, intraoperative visual data such as key blood flow identifiers to surgeons.
Stryker Corp. has made its second acquisition of the year, picking up Gauss Surgical Inc. – the developer of an artificial intelligence (AI) platform for real-time monitoring of blood loss during surgery. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Stryker’s shares (NASDAQ:SYK) were trading 5% higher following the acquisition. Menlo Park, Calif.-based Gauss Surgical’s Triton AI technology aims to fill a void in maternal health by enabling early detection of hemorrhage.
