J&J pauses Varipulse cases on stroke concerns

Johnson & Johnson halted the limited rollout of its Varipulse pulsed field ablation system on Jan. 5 to “investigate the root causes of four reported neurovascular events in the U.S. external evaluation.” So far, just 130 cases have been completed in the U.S. since the company received U.S. FDA approval in November for use in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

The force is with Field Medical Inc. as it celebrates the U.S. FDA’s decisions to grant breakthrough device designation (BDD) to its Fieldforce ablation system and to accept it into the agency’s Total Product Life Cycle Advisory Program pilot. Field Medical designed the Fieldforce pulsed field ablation catheter specifically to treat ventricular tachycardia. The BDD applies to its use in monomorphic scar-related VT.

Medtronic savors diabetes device boost to quarterly results

Medtronic plc hit a sweet spot with its diabetes devices, with the unit leading the company in growth in its first quarter 2025 results. Diabetes device sales grew 11.8% to $647 million for the quarter, an important boost that pushed total revenue up to $7.9 billion ($8.01 billion, adjusted), a 2.8% reported increase or 5.3% exchange rate impact. No other unit saw more than single-digit increases in sales.

Kardium Inc. landed $104 million in new financing for its Globe mapping and ablation system for atrial fibrillation, positioning it to enter the rapidly changing field in the U.S. The funds will allow the company to finish its PULSAR trial, secure FDA approval and launch its pulsed field ablation system commercially, Kardium Chief Financial Officer Koert VandenEnden told BioWorld.

Pulsed field ablation electrifies the market

Pulsed field ablation dominated the news out of the Heart Rhythm Society meeting this week with three late-breaking studies highlighting the safety and efficacy of the technology replacing thermal ablation for treatment of atrial fibrillation and active discussion of the ‘unprecedented’ growth of these procedures. Boston Scientific Corp’s Farapulse is rapidly building dominance in the field, while results from Johnson & Johnson’s Varipulse study and Medtronic plc’s trial of the Affera system set up those companies for U.S. FDA approval later this year.
