Patent update: ASU researchers develop simple test for ketones to measure metabolic rate

Arizona State University (ASU) reported the receipt of a patent for a device with colorimetric sensors for measuring excreted ketones in a body fluid. Additional sensors may be incorporated to measure flow rate of the body fluid, barometric pressure, humidity, and chemicals such as oxygen and carbon dioxide present in the fluid, and a system to measure metabolic rate and respiratory quotient via oxygen consumption rate and carbon dioxide production rate.

Just three months after raising $12.9 million, Remedee Labs SAS reported it has signed a partnership with pharmaceutical group Upsa SAS to ramp commercialization of its smart bracelet for chronic pain. “We are going to rapidly deploy our non-invasive chronic pain relief technology throughout France and Europe,” David Crouzier, co-founder and CEO of Remedee Labs, told BioWorld.

Resilient develops wearable device to reverse opioid overdoses

Free, no-prescription-required access to naloxone injectors and nasal sprays has reduced deaths from opioid overdoses by 11% in some communities, but they only work if someone with the reversal agent is available when a person overdoses. Many times, unfortunately, opioid users are alone when an overdose occurs. Resilient Lifescience Inc. hopes to save those lives, too. The company is developing a wearable patch that monitors vital signs and automatically administers naloxone when needed.

Medtronic plc inked an agreement to combine its patient care technologies with a wearable, remote monitoring platform developed by Pasadena, Calif.-based Rockley Photonics Inc. The Bioptx contains compact, photonics-based sensors inside a wristband to monitor a range of biomarkers beyond standard blood pressure, heart rate, pulse oximetry and glucose levels, making Rockley and Medtronic’s development partnership, said Rockley Chair and CEO Andrew Rickman, “a terrific match.”

The ultrasound scan takes two minutes to scan the entire breast volume and offers 3D visualization of the breast tissue.
