Conmed buys bioinductive scaffold technology startup for $85M

Conmed Corp. is acquiring soft tissue augmentation company Biorez Inc. for $85 million and up to an additional $165 million in growth-based earnout payments over a four-year period. The New Haven, Conn.-based company develops Biobrace, a bioinductive implant which promotes soft tissue healing in tendon and ligament injuries. The implant is cleared for use by the U.S. FDA in two product sizes.

Perkinelmer sells non-medical businesses for $2.45B to focus on life sciences and diagnostics

Perkinelmer Inc. agreed to divest three businesses in a sale to private equity firm New Mountain Capital for $2.45 billion in cash to create a “pure-play, high growth, high margin life sciences and diagnostics company with unique scale,” said Perkinelmer president and CEO Prahlad Singh.

Think Surgical inks deal to bring Curexo robot to US market

Think Surgical Inc. is deepening ties with South Korean company Curexo Inc. through a new development and distribution deal. Under the terms of the agreement, Think will have exclusive rights to distribute Curexo’s Cuvis-Joint robotic platform, including any additional technology, in the U.S. and other countries. The orthopedic robot is currently used by surgeons in Korea and India for pre-planning surgery.

Limacorporate, Orthofix join forces to supply new high hip dislocation technology

Limacorporate S.p.A has outlicensed to Orthofix Medical Inc. new medical technology for patients suffering from chronic high dislocation of the hip. The deal, for U.S. market rights, will see the companies combine the limb-lengthening technology of Orthofix’s Fitbone intramedullary nail system with Limacorporate’s 3D-printed pelvic fixation device to form what Emmanuel Bonhomme, CEO of Limacorporate, told BioWorld is “a personalized and unique complex hip replacement solution.”

Robocath’s Cathbot concludes initial study of robot-assisted PCI platform in China

Robocath SAS said Cathbot, its joint venture set up in 2020, has enrolled the final patient for its clinical study in China to evaluate the safety and the efficacy of its robotic platform for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). “The completion of our PCI robotic multicenter trial in China is a crucial milestone in our development in this part of the world,” Philippe Bencteux, president and founder of Robocath, told BioWorld.

Terumo, Eliaz partner to improve outcomes for acute kidney injury

Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT) is teaming up with Eliaz Therapeutics Inc. to develop and commercialize a new type of apheresis treatment for acute kidney injury (AKI) and sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (S-AKI). The exclusive collaboration aims to reduce long-term morbidity and death in patients with AKIs by removing an upstream inflammatory protein called Galectin-3 (Gal-3) from blood plasma.

Exo Inc. acquired Medo Dx Pte, an artificial intelligence (AI) developer, to make its point-of-care ultrasound imaging even easier to use. Medo brings two FDA-cleared artificial intelligence algorithms that draw on a library of millions of ultrasound images and health data to expand the settings for ultrasound and the reduce the expertise required for its use. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Abbvie Inc. and Istar Medical SA inked a deal to develop and commercialize Istar’s Miniject device to treat patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. The minimally invasive glaucoma surgical (MIGS) device won CE mark approval in November and has been available in some European countries since early 2022.

3M unveils plan to spin off health care business

3M Co. reported a planned spinoff of its health care business by 2023, during the company’s second quarter earnings. The health care company will operate as a separate public company focused on wound care, health care IT, oral care and biopharma filtration. 3M said the health care business is expected to be spun off with net leverage of approximately 3.0x to 3.5x EBITDA and the ‘New 3M’ company will retain a stake of 19.9% in health care, which will be monetized over time.

Thales SA signed a major partnership with the Curie Institute to use very high-intensity electron FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) in cancer therapy. Based on its experience in the field of particle accelerators, “we have all the manufacturing facilities and human know-how necessary to ramp research and development for this new technology,” Charles-Antoine Goffin, vice president, microwave & imaging subsystems at Thales, told BioWorld.
