BD shines in Q4 with life sciences growing more than 30%

Becton, Dickinson and Co. (BD) reported good news Thursday, as it saw quarterly revenues of $4.784 billion for its fourth fiscal quarter, an increase of 4.4% over the prior-year period. Of note, the company’s life sciences segment saw worldwide revenues of $1.488 billion, representing an increase of 31.2% over the prior-year period as reported, or 31.4% on a currency-neutral basis.

Philips looks to help COPD patients with noninvasive ventilator

Royal Philips NV is reporting the launch of Philips Ventilator Bipap A40 EFL, a noninvasive ventilator that aims to help patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) breathe easier. With its CE mark in hand, the company has tagged initial target markets as France, Italy and the U.K. Additional European markets are expected to come next year.

Virtual Incision Corp. revealed that it had received a green light from the U.S. FDA to begin its study of its miniaturized in vivo robotic assistant (MIRA) Platform. Initially, the company will focus the platform on minimally invasive laparoscopic colon surgery. With the MIRA Platform, the company will aim to enter a growing market in the U.S., where more than 400,000 colon resection procedures are performed each year.

Edwards sees TAVR sales jump 6% as Q3 beats expectations

Edwards Lifesciences Corp. reported good news this week, with its third-quarter results exceeding expectations. Sales came in at $1.1 billion, an increase of 4%, and CEO Mike Mussallem highlighted the success of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), with the Sapien valve platform performing well. Mussallem noted that TAVR sales were $745 million, up 6%, with Europe showing strength.
