The discovery of a complex formed by two types of ion channels in neurons has allowed researchers from Heidelberg University to develop an inhibitor that stopped motor neuron degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in mouse models and human brain organoids.

Fundamental Pharma GmbH has raised €10 million (US$10.3 million) in a seed round to develop a new class of glutamate inhibitors, after uncovering a route to maintaining the protective effects of the neurotransmitter in the synapses while preventing neurotoxicity when it is released elsewhere.

Investigators at the University of Heidelberg have identified a previously unknown mechanism for excitotoxicity and used their insight to identify “unconventional neuroprotectant” compounds that could prevent cell death and reduce brain damage in a mouse model of stroke.
