Medtronic plc is continuing to put its money where its mouth is as it plans to exercise its option to acquire Cathworks Ltd. for up to $585 million. The company said last month it was committed to expanding its pipeline through strategic investments and targeted acquisitions. The move for Cathworks comes on the heels of Medtronic’s $90 million investment in Anteris Technologies Global Corp.

Natera envisions cancer-testing future with $450M Foresight buy

Natera Inc. completed the acquisition of Foresight Diagnostics Inc. in a deal structured as $275 million up front plus contingent payments of up to $175 million based on achieving certain milestones for revenue and reimbursement coverage. The companies expect to close the transaction in the second quarter of 2026.

Cha Group to Acquire Majority Stake in Kakao Healthcare

Kakao Healthcare Corp. plans to secure ₩100 billion (US$68 million) through two investment deals with Cha Biomedical Group and outside investors by early next year. The transactions, expected to close by the first quarter of 2026, will make Cha the controlling shareholder of Kakao Healthcare with a 43.08% stake. Kakao Corp., the parent company, will hold 29.99%, and external investors will own 26.93%.

GE Healthcare Technologies Inc. agreed to purchase medical imaging company Intelerad Medical Systems Inc. for $2.3 billion in cash, boosting its capabilities in cardiology and radiology. The deal, expected to close in the first half of 2026, advances GE Healthcare's dual strategies of expanding from primarily inpatient products to outpatient and ambulatory care settings and tripling its cloud-enabled products by 2028.

Breaking up isn’t so hard to do, it seems. Just two years after spinning off its consumer products as Kenvue Inc., Johnson & Johnson aims to part ways with its orthopedics unit, which will take up the Depuy Synthes name first created when Synthes Inc. married into the J&J Depuy ortho unit in 2012 for a tidy sum of $19.7 billion. Depuy was itself acquired in 1998.

Terumo enters transplant biz with $1.5B Organox buy

After making a significant strategic investment in Oxganox Ltd. earlier this year, Terumo Corp. quickly returned to buy the organ preservation company. On Aug. 25, the companies announced that Terumo would acquire Organox for $1.5 billion, marking Terumo’s entry into the organ transplant sector. The transaction is one of the largest exits ever for the U.K. med-tech sector.

Histosonics sells majority stake for $2.25B

A management-led syndicate of prominent investors acquired a majority stake in Histosonics Inc. that values the company at approximately $2.25 billion. The funding will support expansion of the Edison Histotripsy system and therapy platform into new clinical indications and markets. Edison uses non-invasive focused ultrasound energy to destroy tumors.
