The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit held another hearing involving a patent by Nuvasive Inc., of San Diego, for the company's Extreme lateral interbody fusion (XILF) system, during which the Federal Circuit vacated the Patent Trial and Appeal Board's (PTAB) finding of obviousness. Smiths Group plc has opted to separate its main business from its medical device unit, Smiths Medical. The London-based industrial conglomerate said that the move would allow the unit to reach its full potential by focusing on new product launches and market opportunities.
