Inside the Beltway: CMS covers hepatitis C test, but mix of lab, POC testing unclear

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced June 2 it will cover screening for hepatitis C virus, a test that can be done in a physician's office thanks to the fact that OraSure Technologies (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) has an FDA approved rapid test for the virus called OraQuick. The news bodes well for the firm, but exactly how much of the new demand for hepatitis C testing will go to labs and how much to the OraQuick remains to be seen. Read More
