Apoqlar GmbH received a green light from the FDA for its VSI Holomedicine, a mixed reality software enabling surgeons to plan procedures in an immersive 3D experience. The company expects to release the technology for clinical use in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2023. Read More

Bluestar Genomics hopes to beat pancreatic cancer with early detection

Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest of cancers with just one in nine patients surviving five years after diagnosis. The low rate of survival largely results from the late stage at which the cancer is first detected, as 65% patients are not diagnosed until the disease has metastasized. Bluestar Genomics Inc. hopes it has developed an assay that can detect the cancer much sooner, allowing patients and their physicians to get ahead of the malignancy well before it spreads. Read More

Nanomaterial allows location-specific fat targeting

The positively charged nanoparticle polyamidoamine generation 3 (P-G3) can be specifically targeted to either visceral or subcutaneous fat, and affects both types of fat in different ways, researchers from Columbia University reported in two papers recently published. The studies, published online in Nature Nanotechnology on Dec. 1, 2022, and in Biomaterials on Nov. 28, 2022, are both “a conceptual advance” and “quite amenable to translation,” co-corresponding author Kam Leong told BioWorld.
