Aspect and Novo enter a deal worth up to $2.6B

In collaborating with Novo Nordisk A/S, privately held Aspect Biosystems Ltd. entered its biggest ever deal that could bring in more than $2.6 billion while advancing its 3D, bioprinted tissue therapeutics technology. The two companies will collaborate to develop up to four diabetes and/or obesity products, a Novo specialty, using implantable bioprinted tissues to replace, repair or supplement human biological functions. The initial target will be type 1 diabetes. Read More

Function Oncology quietly raised $28M for gene function approach to precision oncology

Function Oncology Inc. emerged from stealth on April 12 with the announcement of a $28 million series A financing that will continue support development of its CRISPR-enabled platform to profile cancer in patient-specific detail. The platform goes beyond next-generation sequencing to measure gene function, potentially allowing identification of new therapeutic targets and better matching of available therapies to vulnerabilities in an individual’s tumors. Environmental Protection Agency - US EPA

EPA preparing to crack down on emissions of ethylene oxide

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a new set of requirements for control of emissions of ethylene oxide (EtO), a standard the agency claims will “slash” emissions by 80% per year. The problem for med-tech trade associations is that EPA expects that the abatements be implemented within 18 months, a pace that industry says is too aggressive and could lead to shortages of critical devices and products used in surgeries and other procedures. The U.S. FDA has granted de novo authorization to Moximed Inc. for its Misha knee system, a first-of-its-kind implantable shock absorber for people suffering from osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The device is intended to relieve pain and improve daily function in patients ineligible for, or not ready to undergo, joint replacement. Read More

Sirius Medical secures $13M in series B round for surgical tumor location software

Sirius Medical BV reported successfully closing a $13 million series B round to develop its tumor localization technology. This round was led by Holland Capital Management BV, with support from existing investor BOM Capital BV – through their vehicle, Brabant Ventures – along with Curie Capital BV and Team Holmium BV, plus major investment from Sirius Medical’s management and team. Norgine Ventures Management Ltd., joined as a new investor in this round. Read More

WHO pushes for more access to COVID-19 drugs

As country after country downshifts out of pandemic mode, the need for affordable COVID-19 therapies continues, especially in middle-income countries that are not included in current voluntary licensing arrangements.
