Ion Beam Applications (IBA; Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) will add two proton therapy gantry treatment rooms in Guangdong, China in a deal valued at $22.25 million.
The contract extends a collaboration agreement signed in Dec. 2014 with Guangdong Hengju Medical Technologies (Guangzhou, China) that was valued at $34 million for IBA with what it termed a significant up-front payment. A total of three treatment rooms will be equipped with IBA's pencil beam scanning capability using the next generation Proteus PLUS system. The full facility is set to open in the summer of 2017.
Formerly known as Canton, Guangdong province borders Hong Kong and Macau. Guangdong Hengju Medical Technologies is the first company in China focusing on the development and expansion of proton therapy in China.
