• Karin Eastham, executive VP/COO and a member of the board of trustees of Burnham Institute for Medical Research (La Jolla, California), has resigned, effective Sept. 30. The institute is dedicated to discovering the fundamental molecular causes of disease.

• Helicos BioSciences (Cambridge, Massachusetts) said that Bill Efcavitch, PhD, was named chief technology officer, Marc Levine has joined the company as senior VP of product development and Stan Letovsky, PhD, has joined as VP for scientific informatics. Before taking over as CTO, Efcavitch had been Helicos' senior VP of product development since 2004. Levine's experience prior to joining Helicos in June included 25 years with Teradyne, where his roles in the company ranged from sales and customer service to engineering and general management. Letovsky has held informatics management roles with Codon Devices, Millennium Pharmaceuticals and Monsanto. Helicos BioSciences is a life science company focused on genetic analysis technologies.

• Jie Liu was named COO of Mindray Medical International (Shenzhen, China). Liu has served as Mindray's executive VP of international sales and marketing since 2007. Mindray specializes in three primary business segments: patient monitoring & life support, in vitro diagnostic products and medical imaging systems.
