Calypso Medical Technologies (Seattle) reported its intent to interface the company's Calypso 4D Localization System to Varian Medical System 's (Palo Alto, California) treatment planning system and linear accelerators to support precise radiotherapy treatments for cancer patients.

The Calypso system will be interfaced with Varian's Eclipse in the initial product launch. Future products will be developed with the 4D Integrated Treatment console to give clinicians additional capabilities for patient positioning, motion management and tumor targeting.

Calypso Medical said it intends to collaborate with Varian on patient positioning, motion management, and tumor targeting solutions throughout treatment delivery.

The Calypso 4D Localization System and implanted Beacon electromagnetic transponders are designed to provide an objective and continuous method to setup and continuously monitor the patient during radiation delivery.

In other agreement news:

• Oncura (Arlington Heights, Illinois), a provider of brachytherapy products, reported a new three-year brachytherapy award to provide Premier (San Diego) member hospitals with Oncura's complete line of brachytherapy seeds products. Premier is one of the largest healthcare group purchasing organizations in the U.S.

The agreement will begin on August 1 and will run for a three-year term.

Oncura will provide Premier's membership with access to its Iodine-125 brachytherapy portfolio including the OncoSeed, RAPID Strand and RAPID Strand Rx and its Prospera Palladium-103 products.

An agreement to create an interface between etrials ' (Montpelier, Vermont) Electronic Data Capture (EDC) and LabPas CT, the Phase I automation software developed by Green Mountain Logic (GML; Morrisville, North Carolina), was reported by the two companies.

The interface provides a complete end-to-end solution for Phase I clinical research and shortens overall trial times while also improving data quality, according to the companies. LabPas CT, a full enterprise solution for the conduct of Phase I clinical trials, will automate key clinical trial data collection, make trial data available in real-time and electronically export validated data to etrials' EDC. etrials' EDC will provide a web-based solution for collecting, managing and analyzing real-time clinical trial information.
