Inverness Medical Innovations (Waltham, Massachusetts), a developer of medical devices and provider of women's health and nutritional products, reported settling a patent infringement litigation brought against Advanced Clinical Systems International (ACS) in the Federal Court of Australia by acquiring ACS' consumer pregnancy test business for about $4.55 million.

The acquired business includes all rights to the brand Crystal Clear, which Inverness said is the leading consumer pregnancy test in Australia and has a leading position in New Zealand. ACS will operate the acquired business for Inverness for up to 12 months pursuant to a transition services agreement entered into as part of the transaction.

Inverness Medical is a global manufacturer of diagnostic products for the over-the-counter pregnancy and fertility/ovulation test market and the professional rapid diagnostic test market.

The company said it is “presently exploring new opportunities for its proprietary electrochemical and other technologies in a variety of professional diagnostic and consumer-oriented applications, including immuno-diagnostics, with a focus on women's health and cardiology.“

MedQuist (Mount Laurel, New Jersey), the largest U.S. provider of electronic medical transcription services, said it has received an administrative subpoena for documents from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts.

The subpoena seeks information primarily about the company's provision of medical transcription services to governmental and non-governmental customers, MedQuist said.

It added that the information has been requested in connection with a government investigation into whether MedQuist and others violated federal laws in connection with the provision of such services.

MedQuist said it intends to cooperate fully with the subpoena and continues to cooperate with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in connection with the SEC's ongoing investigation of the company, which was disclosed last July.

MedQuist, a member of the Philips group of companies, provides document workflow management, digital dictation, speech recognition, mobile dictation devices, web-based transcription, electronic signature, medical coding products and outsourcing services.
