Affymetrix, a subsidiary of Affymax N.V. (NASDAQ:AFMXF),announced that it has received a $500,000 Phase II small-business innovation research (SBIR) grant from the U.S.Department of Energy.

The grant will fund the Palo Alto, Calif., company's work onapplying Affymax's VLSIPS (very large-scale immobilizedpolymer synthesis) chip technology to DNA sequencing andgenetic analysis.

"In the first phase of this grant, we demonstrated the proof ofconcept for creating large arrays of DNA probes for use ingenetic analysis," stated Stephen Fodor, chief technical officerof Affymetrix. "Phase II should help enable Affymetrix tomove the technology toward commercialization."
