The diagnostics division of MicroProbe Corp. of Bothell, Wash.,was awarded a $50,000 Phase I Small Business InnovationResearch (SBIR) grant from the National Institutes of Health tofurther develop and evaluate a test to detect antibioticresistance of bacteria. The DNA probe-based test targetsmetabolic activity rather than resistant genes; it could beespecially useful for detecting antibiotic-resistant strains thatcause pulmonary tuberculosis.
