APPLIED BIOSYSTEMS PROFITS DIPApplied Biosystems Inc. (NASDAQ:ABIO) of Foster City, Calif.,said a weaker U.S. dollar, compared with other currencies,effectively boosted second-quarter sales by 7 percent while itraised.overhead expenses 4 percent and operating expenses 5percent.

ABI said its gross margins declined from 51 percent in lastyear's second quarter to 47 percent in the recently endedquarter. The lower margin was due to lower-priced productsaccounting for a higher proportion of sales. In addition, thecompany said its order level increased in the recent quarter,exceeding shipments during the quarter.

Bio-Electro Systems Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., reported a $3.3million fourth-quarter loss and a $12.7 million loss for theyear, due in part to research and development expensesincurred under development contracts with Alza Corp. andMedtronic Inc.
