CMS revisits coverage criteria for Parkinson’s, essential tremor

The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services held a June 2025 advisory meeting to revisit existing coverage for devices used in treatment and management of Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor, which is divided between a 2003 national coverage determination and at least one local coverage determination. The advisory committee recommended that CMS adopt a series of patient- and clinician-reported outcomes that might not be reflected in the evidentiary bases for currently available technologies. The development suggests that some manufacturers may have to incur a significant cost in standing up studies that would generate the data needed for any changes to existing coverage policies.

Republican senators flag NIH funding delays

While U.S. government cost-cutting seems to be the Trump administration’s priority that consumes all others, some Republican senators are pushing back – at least when it comes to the NIH. Eight senators recently wrote to Russell Vought, head of the White House Office of Management and Budget, to voice their concerns about the administration’s slow disbursement rate of the NIH’s fiscal 2025 funds. “Suspension of these appropriated funds – whether formally withheld or functionally delayed – could threaten Americans’ ability to access better treatments and limit our nation’s leadership in biomedical science,” according to the senators’ letter. “It also risks severing ongoing NIH-funded research prior to actionable results.”

Baxter clarifies Novum IQ update, but fails to describe root cause

The U.S. FDA posted an update on the early alert for the Novum IQ infusion pump by Baxter International Inc., which includes a suggestion that the administration set be moved half an inch farther down the line before doubling the bolus infusion rate. What the FDA does not clarify is the need for the longer displacement of the administration set, which is a move that could be undertaken to address any one of a series of problems, such as the known problems associated with back pressure on infusion pump performance.

COMP as a potential early biomarker of thoracic aortic dissection

Thoracic aortic dissection can progress to a highly lethal cardiac emergency, but it cannot usually be detected in early stages, so suitable biomarkers of progression are needed. Levels of C-reactive protein in serum rise during progression, but they also rise in infectious or autoimmune conditions, making the biomarker nonspecific.
