United Therapeutics buying Miromatrix for up to $140M

United Therapeutics Corp. signed an agreement to acquire Miromatrix Medical Inc. for up to $140 million in cash, buying its way into additional organic growth. The deal would add Miromatrix’s comprehensive portfolio of bio-engineered organs to United’s existing organ production platform.

3D Systems acquires Volumetric for up to $400M, expands organ bioprinting program

3D Systems Inc. acquired Volumetric Biotechnologies Inc. as part of its plan to expand its organ bioprinting program. The deal entails a $45 million upfront payment with an additional $355 million linked to meeting milestones “planned between now and 2035, and aligned with key points in the development process,” Volumetric President and CEO Jeffrey Graves told BioWorld. Houston-based Volumetric has focused on building replacement organs through bioprinting and created an approach that produces complex vasculature using light-based bioprinting.

SCOTUS to wade into edge of 340B conundrum

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to take up one piece of the 340B conundrum that’s pitting biopharma against hospitals and catching the Department of Health and Human Services in between. The case the court agreed to hear, the American Hospital Association (AHA) v. Becerra, focuses on whether HHS has the authority to cut Medicare reimbursement rates to reflect the steep discounts 340B hospitals get on certain prescription drugs.

United Therapeutics to extend Tyvaso's reach with expanded label

A new FDA approval for United Therapeutics Corp.'s prostacyclin analogue, Tyvaso (treprostinil), has expanded its label to include the treatment of pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease to improve exercise ability. The regulatory win could double the number of patients taking the medicine by the end of 2022, barring any COVID-19-related delay, said company President and CEO Michael Benkowitz.

HHS sides with hospitals in 340B payment dispute

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released an advisory opinion last week saying that drug manufacturers are obligated to provide 340B pricing for outpatient drugs dispensed by contract pharmacies on behalf of hospitals and clinics that qualify for the discounts. But the opinion said nothing about enforcement action or assessing civil penalties against manufacturers who refuse to do so.

According to an analysis conducted by BioWorld of the fourth-quarter and year-end 2019 financial reports filed by the top 100 public biopharmaceutical companies ranked by market cap, and excluding big pharma companies, the amount that was invested in research and development (R&D) during the year increased 35% compared to the same period in 2018.
