Bringing a new medical device or diagnostic to market has never been a small feat for small companies, and regulatory review is still one of the largest hurdles facing device makers. However, a new report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the UCLA Biodesign program shows that the twin issues of coverage and reimbursement still combine to present the most difficult hurdle to overcome for med-tech companies.

At this year’s Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2022 conference in Orlando, Fla., digital health companies across the sector gathered to showcase new products and services. HIMSS CEO Hal Wolf urged the industry to focus on global health equity and a 2022 survey of health care leaders highlighted the elements of digital transformation that are causing the biggest buzz.

Two pharmas and a med-tech crack Clarivate’s list of the top innovators worldwide

Three companies from the pharmaceutical and med-tech sectors are among this year’s most influential innovators, according to the newest edition of Clarivate plc’s Top 100 Global Innovators 2022. The pharmaceutical companies that were found to be the most innovative in the top 100 list are Johnson & Johnson, of New Brunswick, N.J., and Roche AG, of Basel, Switzerland. Royal Philips NV, of Amsterdam, was found to be the most innovative med-tech company in the top 100.

Med-tech innovations included in The Royal Academy of Engineering’s LIF Global 2022 program

The Royal Academy of Engineering in the U.K. has revealed a new batch of 70 entrepreneurs, including some developers of med-tech solutions, for its Leaders in Innovation Fellowships Global (LIF Global) program. This comes just two months after the LIF Advance edition of the initiative, which had 15 chosen. The selected entrepreneurs will receive equity-free support over the next six months from the training and mentorship program.

Prices for state covered drugs in China to be slashed by an average of 61.7%

Pharmaceutical companies in China will cut the prices for more than five dozen drugs by an average of 61.7% to get them on the latest version of the country’s National Drug Reimbursement List. The National Healthcare Security Administration released the new list on Dec. 3, 2021. The new list includes 74 new drugs, the vast majority of which are branded products without generic versions in China. Only seven of the new drugs on the list have generic versions.
