An artificial intelligence (AI) tool developed by Annalise.ai Pty Ltd. was able to improve radiologists’ accuracy in detecting abnormalities on non-contrast computed tomography brain (CTB) scans. According to a study published in European Radiology, the Annalise Enterprise CTB module improved radiologists' accuracy by 32% and reduced their overall reading time by 11%.

Gleamer SAS reported closing a series B round of $29.6 million to help expand its portfolio of artificial intelligence (AI) systems for radiologists and ramp international expansion. The exercise was led by Supernova Invest SAS who put up $11 million, joined by Heal Capital SAS with $5.5 million.

Bayer AG acquired Blackford Analysis Ltd., a British developer of artificial intelligence systems that help make diagnoses using medical images in the U.K. and U.S. The companies did not disclose any financial details. “This deal is part of our strategy to drive innovation in radiology, including the development and adoption of AI within the workflow, with the goal of ultimately improving patient care and advance our position in digital medical imaging,” Stefan Oelrich, a board member at Bayer AG and president of Bayer’s pharmaceutical division, told BioWorld.

Developers of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms in medical radiology tend to think of regulatory approval as the primary hurdle to market, but there is also the question of how to pay for the use of these products. Public and private payers obviously hold the purse strings, but appealing to payers is still not always as straightforward proposition as some would like, reinforcing the notion that coverage and reimbursement still combine to serve as one of the highest hurdles to market for AI and ML.
