Mahana Therapeutics Inc. obtained a CE mark for Parallel, a prescription digital therapeutic device to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in conjunction with other IBS treatments. Developed by a team of U.K. psychologists, the three-month program delivers cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) via a web-based application.

Empatica wins CE mark for wearable-based early symptoms detection of COVID-19

MIT Media Labs spinoff Empatica Inc. secured the CE mark for its Aura system, a wearable solution for the monitoring and early alert of respiratory infections, including COVID-19. For use with people 14 and older, Aura is commercially available in Europe and the U.K., and for pilot purposes in the U.S. – pending FDA authorization. Aura’s algorithm analyzes vital signs from Empatica smartwatches, comparing data against the wearer’s historical baselines. In validation studies, Aura was able to detect patients with possible H1N1 influenza, rhinovirus or SARS-CoV-2 infection with 0.94 sensitivity. Detection occurred on average two days after infection.

EU regulatory system under enormous pressure as compliance deadline approaches

The well-known overhaul of the European Union’s (EU) med-tech regulatory system was already a massive lift before the events of 2020, but the three-year transition period begins in 90 days with a large overhang of issues. Among these is that the ISO 14971 risk management standard is not recognized in the EU, and Adrian Keene, director of EU services for North American Science Associates Inc., said on a Feb. 25 webinar that “anything manufacturers can do to smooth the pathway” for device certification and recertification “is worth considering.”

Speak up! Voice sample provides accurate screen for COVID-19

"Step up, speak up" could be the next mantra for COVID-19 screening at airports, universities and large employers if Vocalis Health Inc.'s screening tool takes off – and its recent CE mark approval makes that more likely. Vocalis reported that a large study found the tool, which uses AI-powered vocal biomarkers, had greater than 80% sensitivity and specificity, even in asymptomatic individuals.

Cardiacsense obtains CE mark for atrial fibrillation detection

Cardiacsense Ltd.’s medical watch received CE mark for the detection of atrial fibrillation and heart rate variability monitoring. The watch provides continuous, long-term monitoring of heart arrhythmias without cumbersome external devices or invasive implants. The European clearance does not require a prescription for use and will enable the Caesarea, Israel-based company to begin distribution under a number of agreements the company signed in 2020.

Medtronic snags FDA approval for Diamondtemp Ablation system in atrial fibrillation

Medtronic plc received U.S. FDA premarket approval of its Diamondtemp Ablation (DTA) system for treatment of patients with recurrent, symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The temperature-controlled radiofrequency (RF) ablation system features industrial-grade diamonds, which provide 200 to 400 times the thermal conductivity seen in conventional ablation and enable more efficient delivery of energy to regions of the heart responsible for the erratic electrical signals underlying atrial fibrillation (AF).

Distalmotion wins CE mark for surgical robot

The medical device company Distalmotion SA has hit a regulatory milestone in the commercialization of its surgical robot, Dexter, earning a CE mark in Europe. The Dexter surgical robot is built with the aim of allowing surgeons to take a hybrid approach to minimally invasive surgery, using the robot for tasks such as suturing and complex dissections while switching to a laparoscopic approach for stapling and basic dissections.

Carmat SA said its total artificial heart received the CE mark, and the company plans to ramp up production to enable the launch of the device in the second quarter of 2021. The artificial heart offers a bridge to transplant in patients with end-stage biventricular heart failure. It provides an alternative for individuals for whom maximal medical therapy and left ventricular assist device are insufficient or contraindicated.

According to the company, it is the first digital cytology platform to combine a new artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm with advanced digital imaging to assist cytotechnologists and pathologists in detecting precancerous lesions and malignant cells in women.
