A second attempt by Nabriva Therapeutics plc to win U.S. approval for the antibiotic Contepo (fosfomycin) has been undone by COVID-19. Manufacturing issues stymied the original NDA. This time, restrictions of FDA staff travel to Europe sunk the venture, leading to a new complete response letter (CRL) for the candidate as a potential treatment of complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI), including acute pyelonephritis.

Fidget spinners are hand-held toys based on a roller bearing and three weighted lobes, which can spin freely, creating centrifugal force when activated manually. Generating centrifugal force with a fidget spinner takes neither electricity nor trained staff. And that has suggested to several researchers that such spinners, under the right circumstances, could be used for centrifugation under circumstances where reliably operating a centrifuge, for  whatever reason, is a challenge.

Scanwell Health aims to ease testing for UTIs with smartphone-enabled option

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common reason for women to visit their doctor. While virtual doctor visits have been possible to detect UTIs, patient-reported symptoms typically have drove diagnoses. Now, Los Angeles-based Scanwell Health is bringing its at-home smartphone-enabled test and treatment service for UTIs to all 50 states. Scanwell said its offering its the first U.S. FDA-cleared urine testing app available over-the-counter without a prescription.
