Variantyx scoops up $20M for whole genome sequencing-based testing methodology

Variantyx Inc. raised $20 million in a series C financing led by GHS Fund (Quark Venture LP and GF Securities). The new funds are earmarked for the development of comprehensive tumor diagnostic solutions and sales expansion. Also taking part in the round were new investor IBM Ventures and existing investors Pitango Venture Capital, New Era Capital Partners and 20/20 Healthcare Partners. With this latest infusion, Variantyx has raised a total of $38 million.

Illumina acquires Dutch cloud software startup Bluebee to enhance genomic data analysis

San Diego-based Illumina Inc. is synonymous with next-generation sequencing (NGS) equipment. But when it comes to dealmaking, the genomics giant is focused largely on software to make its results more useful, accessible and affordable. It has acquired cloud-based software startup Bluebee Holding BV in its latest move on this front.

Whole genome sequencing is not part of treating patients in practice – or even involved in most clinical trials of drug candidates. But C2i Genomics Inc. is working to make that a reality. It applies pattern recognition to whole genome sequencing to create an individualized fingerprint for a given patient’s tumor. The New York-based startup has raised a $12 million series A round to back the development of its technology, which came out of Cornell and the New York Genome Center.
