It’s a time of economic crisis and political upheaval in the U.K. But, according to the country’s pharma trade body, there’s another looming problem of access to clinical trials in the country, which is becoming less and less attractive as a place to conduct life sciences research.
In a development that is a potential boon for wearables and other sectors of the digital health industry, the U.K.’s NICE has petitioned the National Health Service (NHS) to expand its coverage of devices that monitor patients with Parkinson’s disease. That data would be used by NICE to inform a health technology assessment that might ultimately boost sales of these devices if the data suggest a strong benefit to patients and to the U.K. health care budget.
The U.K. could be downgraded as a place to research and launch new medicines because of economic shocks and a looming rebate of 30% or more on sales of branded products, according to industry sources.
The U.K. NHS is implementing the use of Oxford, U.K.-based Genincode plc’s predictive genetic test for patients suffering with hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). The Academic Health Science Network for the North East and North Cumbria (AHSN NENC) is adopting the Lipid Incode test in Darlington following a successful pilot study which demonstrated the test can detect and diagnose people with high cholesterol, a known risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is the first commercial polygenic test for CVD to be implemented by the NHS.
Grail LLC reported a new study with the U.K.’s NHS to assess the clinical utility of its Galleri multi-cancer early detection test (MCED) for reducing late-stage cancer diagnoses. Menlo Park, Calif.-headquartered Grail presented the study design during the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Chicago. The randomized controlled trial will enroll 140,000 asymptomatic participants aged 50-77 living across England to determine if Galleri can find cancers at an early stage when they are less advanced.
