The researchers who enabled patients with spinal cord injuries to walk independently after implanting programmable electrodes below their lesions have now taken things one step further, restoring direct communication from the brain to the spinal cord, enabling the brain rather than an external computer to direct leg movements.

Alphatec Holdings Inc. (ATEC) acquired the robotic-enabled minimally invasive (REMI) system from Fusion Robotics LLC, a division of Integrity Implants Inc. (dba Accelus Inc.), for $55 million in cash. The deal brings a sophisticated navigation system for spine procedures into the Alphatec fold, something management previously identified as a target for expansion. Alphatec focuses on spinal surgery solutions. REMI integrates navigation and robotics into a range of spinal procedures and allows use of either a 3D imaging scan or 2D fluoroscopic images to precisely guide instruments and implants to the desired location during surgery.
Woven Orthopedic Technologies LLC, received U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance for its Ogmend implant enhancement system for use in spine surgery. Ogmend is expected to give surgeons more confidence in using surgical screws when operating in compromised fixation scenarios.
Merit Medical Systems Inc. received a U.S. FDA breakthrough device designation for its Scout MD surgical guidance system, which enables physicians to pinpoint tumor location in soft tissue. The system uses up tiny reflectors to provide multidimensional location data that can improve the ability to remove the entire tumor with minimal trauma to the surrounding tissue, which can be a challenge in surgeries such as lumpectomies.
Globus Medical Inc. entered into a definitive agreement to buy Nuvasive Inc. in an all-stock transaction that will combine two leaders in the musculoskeletal industry into one of the largest companies in the spinal surgery market. While there are many companies in the spine market, the acquisition may still set off an alarm among regulators concerned about consolidation in the field. Both boards unanimously approved the deal.
Companion Spine SAS has acquired Backbone SAS, a company that develops implantable functional motion restoration devices for treating spinal disorders. The inclusion of Backbone's flagship medical device, Lisa – a lumbar implant for stiffness augmentation – completes the Companion Spine portfolio.
Researchers at the Neurorestore research center created a device that allows paralyzed patients with no sensation in their legs to walk again, providing hope for others with complete spinal injury. More remarkably, the team discovered the specific neurons that take over the signaling function between the brain and muscles to permit movement in response to the device’s electrical stimulation, offering a path forward for researchers, clinicians and patients affected by a wide range of neurological disorders.
The annual North American Spine Society (NASS) Conference wraps up in Chicago on Oct. 15 and management discussions and analysts make it clear that the sector is not yet back to normal. While September showed an uptick in procedures, spinal surgery continues to lag the recovery seen elsewhere in orthopedics. As the challenges of the past two years recede, two players have posted notable gains in market share and revenue—Globus Medical Inc. and Alphatec Holdings Inc.—perhaps indicating a competitive advantage for smaller, more agile companies.
Orthofix Medical Inc. and Seaspine Holdings Corp. signed a definitive agreement to combine in an all-stock merger of (near) equals. Following the close, Orthofix shareholders will own approximately 56.5% of the company and Seaspine shareholders will own approximately 43.5%. The new company’s name will be announced prior to the transaction’s anticipated first quarter of 2023 closing.
