Despite the month-to-month decline, the sector has seen strong momentum throughout the first three quarters of 2024, with total deal values reaching $149.02 billion. This represents a 14% increase from the $130.38 billion recorded during the same period in 2023, with 2024 remaining the highest year-to-date deal value on record for BioWorld.

Biopharma deal value in June decreased to $12.82 billion, down from $18.76 billion in May, $15.28 billion in April, and $27.9 billion in January. However, total deals from January through June are trending higher than last year, with $97.09 billion raised in the first half of 2024, 10.5% more than the $87.82 billion deal value in the same period in 2023. The monthly average for 2024 deals is now $16.27 billion, slightly lower than the $18.14 billion monthly average in 2023.

Biopharma deal value surged in May to $18.76 billion, up 23% from April's $15.28 billion. This increase follows March’s $8.29 billion and February’s $7.76 billion, although represents a decline from January’s $27.9 billion. The monthly average for 2024 stands at $15.64 billion, compared to the $18.14 billion monthly average in 2023. Meanwhile, the value of biopharma M&As rose to $4.75 billion in May, an increase from April’s $1.33 billion, which was the lowest figure in nearly a year.
