Sunshine Biopharma continues its move into mRNA cancer treatment

Preclinical data on two newly designed mRNA molecules from Sunshine Biopharma Inc., of Montreal, showed they are effective at killing cancer cells grown in culture. Tests were performed on a variety of cancer cells, including multidrug-resistant breast cancer cells, ovarian adenocarcinoma cells and pancreatic cancer cells, while toxicology studies using normal human cells showed that the mRNA molecules had little or no cytotoxic effects. Third sacker: Bluebird plots major-league layoffs to stay in gene therapy game

Bluebird Bio Inc. became the latest in a spate of gene therapy firms to disclose restructuring plans, as the company aims to save $160 million over the next two years, saying goodbye to about a third of its workforce. It’s the other shoe to drop after Cambridge, Mass.-based Bluebird rattled Wall Street with phraseology in the firm’s fourth-quarter earnings report March 4 that expressed “substantial doubt” regarding whether operations could go on. Senators: Time to plan for the beginning of the end of US health emergency

Even as many in the U.S. are looking for the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra reinforced expectations April 5 that he will continue the emergency declaration into the summer, if not beyond. When asked during a Senate Finance Committee budget hearing if he saw the emergency ending this summer, Becerra declined to give a date, but reiterated his commitment to give stakeholders at least 60 days’ notice. Burr sees need for greater congressional scrutiny of FDA as user fee volumes swell

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee met April 5 to review the user fee agreements for the drug and device centers, but one member of the committee was quite vocal about the ever-growing volume of user fees. Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said the pace with which user fees are increasing suggests that the FDA is growing increasingly independent of Congress. Read More
