IPC The Hospitalist Company (North Hollywood, California) has acquired Hospital Internists of New London (HINL; New London, Connecticut) and Hospital Internists of Westerly (HIW; Westerly, Rhode Island). The acquisition of these two practices marks IPC's expansion into two additional states, raising the company's presence to 21 states. The two practices combined have approximately 55,000 patient encounters annually.
Adam Singer, MD, chairman and CEO of IPC, said, "The acquisition of these practices continues our expansion into New England and the northeast corridor. These two groups have done an excellent job of partnering with their hospitals to deliver high quality care and meet other important hospital goals. We look forward to maintaining and enhancing these partnerships by providing the existing hospitalist teams the tools and resources they need to continuously improve service levels."
Kevin Shushtari MD, founder of both practices and one of the pioneers of the hospital medicine specialty, said, "It is gratifying to have these practices become part of the leading hospitalist company in the country. The financial, management and technology resources that IPC offers will enable both of these practice groups to achieve new milestones in delivering high quality and cost-effective inpatient care."
Ken Donovan MD, Medical Director of HINL, added, "Going forward, local hospitalist practices will better serve their patients and help themselves by partnering with a sophisticated organization like IPC. Trying to build or buy all the infrastructure that IPC offers is too complicated, expensive, and risky for a small group. By partnering with IPC, our practice groups have access to world-class resources, while maintaining the autonomy that is important to our physicians."
