Cortecs International Ltd. announced Friday that Detach, itsplant enzyme-based product for the prevention of diarrhea inpiglets, will be tested in Europe by Hoechst Veterinar GmbH, adivision of Hoechst AG.

The product, developed by Cortecs' Australian subsidiaryEnzacor, has already been launched in Australia and usedcommercially in 500,000 pigs. The agent, which blocks thereceptors for microbes such as Escherichia coli on the intestinalwall, can reduce diarrhea and associated mortality in piglets by40 percent, according to Cortecs of London. E. coli is a majorcause of diarrhea in piglets, which can slow growth or result indeath, the company said.
