Duo of Peijia catheters approved in China for neurointerventional surgery

Peijia Medical Ltd. has received two marketing approvals from China’s NMPA for its catheters to be used in neurointerventional surgery. They are the balloon guide catheter (BGC) Fluxcap and delivery balloon dilation catheter Fastunnel. Both were developed by Peijia’s wholly owned subsidiary Achieva Medical Ltd.

Athersys sees 'Treasure' in stroke data, despite trial's missed endpoint

Shares of Athersys Inc. fell sharply May 20 after its partner and top investor Healios K.K. reported that Multistem (invimestrocel), the experimental cell therapy they've co-developed since 2016, missed the primary endpoint of a Japanese phase II/III ischemic stroke study called Treasure. Many Athersys investors appeared to read the results as bad news for Athersys' ongoing pivotal phase III stroke study, Masters-2.

Low U.S. enrollment helped drive negative FDA panel outcome for Brainsgate

Brainsgate Ltd. came up short in a recent FDA advisory hearing for the company’s Ischemic Stroke System (ISS) to treat stroke despite that the panel was unanimously satisfied with the pivotal trial’s safety numbers. One of the issues with the pivotal study was the small enrollment of study subjects in the U.S., which demonstrates once again the hazards of relying on outside-U.S. study data in applications with the FDA.

FDA approves Abbott's Amplatzer Amulet LAA occluder for afib

Abbott Laboratories received FDA approval for its Amplatzer Amulet left atrial appendage occluder to treat people with atrial fibrillation who are at risk of ischemic stroke about a month earlier than generally expected, given the backlog at the FDA. The dual-closure device closes the left atrial appendage during the procedure, reducing the risk of blood clots immediately and eliminating the need for blood thinners both during the healing process and longer term.

Avicenna.AI has enjoyed a head-spinning series of regulatory nods for its artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions for serious vascular conditions including stroke, pulmonary embolism (PE) and aortic dissection. The Marseille, France-based company gained CE mark for its tool that quantifies the severity of a stroke based on a CT scan of the brain and displays regions that have suffered infarcts in late May, followed by CE mark and FDA 510(k) clearance for its product that permits emergency triage of PE and aortic dissection from CT-scan imaging in early June.
