OVX-033 vaccine exhibits broad protection against SARS-CoV-2 in preclinical models

July 11, 2023
The protection against SARS-CoV-2 provided by spike-based vaccines, although effective, tends to decrease as the virus evolves and new variants of concern appear. Researchers from Osivax SAS reported the first results on cross-protection with OVX-033, a new human SARS-CoV-2 vaccine generated via the oligoDOM platform.

Targeting nuclear ACE2 induces a protective epigenetic signature against SARS-CoV-2 in vivo

July 10, 2023
The search for novel therapies that complement vaccine-induced immune protection against SARS-CoV-2 continues. In previous work, researchers at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and collaborators developed a cell-permeable and highly selective peptide called NACE2i, targeting nuclear angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). In particular, NACE2i spans and targets the ACE2 nuclear localization signal motif, successfully inhibiting nuclear translocation of ACE2 and viral replication in human cell lines infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf reports PD-L1-targeting radiolabeled compounds

July 7, 2023
Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf has patented 3-((3-([1,1’-biphenyl]-3-ylmethoxy)phenoxy)methyl)benzonitrile derivatives that are radiolabeled compounds targeting programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1; CD274). They are reported to be potentially useful for the diagnosis and/or radionuclide therapy treatment of cancer and SARS-CoV-2.

SARS-CoV-2/flu two-hit protective vaccine developed based on RBD conjugated with inactivated influenza A virus

June 28, 2023
SARS-CoV-2 and influenza (flu) viruses share similar clinical manifestations, common transmission mechanisms and target tissues, often overlapping during seasonal outbreaks. In addition, co-infection of these viruses worsens disease severity, emphasizing the pressing need for a vaccine that effectively tackles both.

Enanta divulges new 3CLpro inhibitors

June 26, 2023
Enanta Pharmaceuticals Inc. has synthesized spirocyclic compounds acting as 3C-like proteinase (3CLpro; Mpro; nsp5) (SARS-CoV-2; COVID-19 virus) inhibitors reported to be useful for the treatment of coronavirus acute respiratory syndrome.

Institute for Drug Research patent describes SARS-CoV-2 Mpro inhibitors

June 19, 2023
The Institute for Drug Research has patented pyrrolidine antiviral compounds acting as 3C-like proteinase (3CLpro; Mpro; nsp5) (SARS-CoV-2; COVID-19 virus) inhibitors.

Inhibition of aryl hydrocarbon receptor reduces SARS-CoV-2 replication, ameliorates COVID-19 pathology

June 19, 2023
Having caused over 6.2 million deaths globally ongoing, the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020 continues to pose a serious public health challenge. While the SARS-CoV-2 receptors angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane protease serine 2 play requisite roles in permitting the initial infection, up to 10 proviral host factors have also been determined to play crucial roles in controlling the viral replication, but most are not pharmacologically targetable.

New multispecific antibody platform offers increased potency and breadth against SARS-CoV-2

June 7, 2023
Scientists from the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute and collaborators have reported the application of a multispecific, multiaffinity antibody (Multabody, MB) platform derived from the human apoferritin protomer to enable the multimerization of antibody fragments against SARS-CoV-2. These MBs showed high potency to neutralize SARS-CoV-2 even at lower concentrations than their corresponding MAb counterparts.

COVID-19 vaccines get seasonal treatment as EMA issues recommendations for 2023-2024

June 6, 2023
By Nuala Moran
The EMA and the European Center for Disease Control have said COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers should ditch the existing formulations and adapt their products to target the omicron-descendant XBB.1.5, to protect against SARS-CoV-2 in the winter of 2023–2024.
