Avanos Medical to go private in $1.27B acquisition by AIP

Avanos Medical Inc. has agreed to be acquired by affiliates of American Industrial Partners (AIP)  in an all-cash deal valuing the company at approximately $1.272 billion. Under the terms of the definitive agreement, Avanos stockholders will receive $25 per share in cash for each share of common stock they hold.

Chronic pain is taking a significant toll on the mental health and wellbeing of young people across Europe, according to a survey commissioned by Boston Scientific Corp. Among 16 to 24-year-olds, over half feel anxiety multiple times a week due to their chronic pain and almost one in three said that they “feel like they can’t go on” because of their pain.

The European Commission has granted CE mark approval to Medtronic plc for its Inceptiv closed-loop rechargeable spinal cord stimulator (SCS). The device is the first Medtronic SCS to sense an individual’s biological cues and make adjustments in real time to control pain all day long. Dublin-based Medtronic plans to launch Inceptiv in Europe in the coming months.

US FDA’s draft guidance for opioid use disorder devices greets tepid industry interest

The U.S. FDA has issued a draft guidance for devices intended to address opioid use disorder (OUD), a problem with a massive public health footprint that has defied the efforts of public health programs. The draft guidance highlights some of the difficulties in executing pivotal studies for these devices, but the FDA’s July 27 press omits any mention of a 2018 innovation challenge for this category of devices, a programmatic effort that seems to have yielded little in the way of tangible results.
