Advisory panel urges FDA to reclassify three in vitro diagnostic tests

The U.S. FDA recently convened an advisory hearing to discuss whether three in vitro diagnostics should be reclassified from class III to class II, including tests for the pathogens responsible for Hepatitis B and tuberculosis. The panel agreed that all three of the test types should be reshuffled to the lower-risk class II category, suggesting that test developers now have an opportunity to jump into a market with lower-cost tests that won’t need expensive and drawn-out clinical studies to obtain the FDA’s seal of approval.

CDC, FDA take action on COVID-19 boosters

The FDA amended emergency use authorizations (EUAs) for the Moderna Inc. COVID-19 vaccine as well as the shot from Pfizer Inc. and Biontech SE. A single booster dose was green-lighted for people 18 years and older at least six months after finishing the primary regimen with either of the vaccines, or at least two months after getting the Johnson & Johnson shot.

CDC advisory committee recommends Pfizer-Biontech COVID-19 vaccine for children

In a move that had been expected, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices unanimously recommended the Pfizer Inc.-Biontech SE COVID-19 vaccine as safe and beneficial for children ages 5 through 11. The recommendation, coming from a 14-0 vote, is the committee’s way of reassuring the American public that the vaccine is safe, according to committee member Beth Bell, clinical professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington in Seattle.

ACIP unanimously backs Pfizer/Biontech vaccine; booster data in October?

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) heard a safety update on COVID-19 vaccines, took up the matter of booster shots, and voted on whether to recommend the vaccine from Pfizer Inc. and Biontech SE for people 16 and older, now that it’s fully licensed. Under an emergency use authorization, the vaccine can be given to people 12-15 years old.

FDA, CDC lift pause on J&J vaccine

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices again took up the matter of risk vs. benefit with the COVID-19 vaccine made by Johnson & Johnson, and proved significantly less skeptical at its second meeting. The FDA and CDC swiftly determined that the recommended pause should be lifted and use of the vaccine should resume.
