Even as many in the U.S. are looking for the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra reinforced expectations April 5 that he will continue the emergency declaration into the summer, if not beyond. When asked during a Senate Finance Committee budget hearing if he saw the emergency ending this summer, Becerra declined to give a date, but reiterated his commitment to give stakeholders at least 60 days’ notice.

With the first global approval by Health Canada in hand, Medicago Inc. aims to provide 20 million doses this year of Covifenz – which itself represents another first, as a plant-originated, virus-like particle, recombinant, adjuvanted COVID-19 vaccine. “Hopefully, if all goes well, we’ll be able to do it faster than the last day of the last month” of the year, said Brian Ward, medical officer of Quebec City-based Medicago, a unit of Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corp., which partnered on Covifenz with Glaxosmithkline plc (GSK).

Gilead paying $1.25B, plus royalties, to Viiv to resolve HIV drug patent claims

Gilead Sciences Inc. is making a one-time $1.25 billion payment, with a commitment for a royalty that analysts predict could add as much $1.5 billion more, to Viiv Healthcare Ltd., in a deal designed to resolve all global pending or potential patent infringement claims relating to sales of HIV drug Biktarvy (bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide). The initial payment, recorded in the fourth quarter of 2021, put a significant dent in Gilead’s earnings per share but removes the uncertainty of a trial outcome and clears the way for future bictegravir-containing products.
